The guided tax flow walks you through preparing your crypto taxes in CoinTracker — confirming your accounts, reviewing your transactions, importing your 1099-DAs, and generating the forms you'll file. It doesn't file taxes for you, but once the forms are ready, you can file them with TurboTax, H&R Block, or your tax professional.
Before you begin
A few prerequisites keep the flow moving and your forms accurate.
- Connect every wallet and exchange. Your tax forms are only as accurate as the data in CoinTracker. Add any wallet or exchange you haven't connected yet.
- Wait until all your 1099-DAs have arrived. Exchanges issue Form 1099-DA at different times. Starting the flow before every form arrives means redoing the 1099-DA step later.
- Check your plan. Depending on how many transactions you had in the tax year, you may need to upgrade your CoinTracker plan to generate tax forms at the end.
Start the guided tax flow
- Sign in to CoinTracker and select Taxes.
- Select Get started in the tax status box on the right side of the screen.
- Select Get started on the flow overview to begin the first phase.
Add and confirm your accounts
Your linked wallets and exchanges auto-populate on the accounts screen. The goal of this phase is to make sure CoinTracker has every account that touched crypto in the tax year before you move on.
- Review the list of linked wallets and exchanges. Add any that are missing and reconnect any that show as disconnected.
- Select Next.
- Review the preliminary tax summary that follows — accounts synced, transactions tracked, and a breakdown of short-term capital gain, long-term capital gain, and crypto income — and confirm the totals and wallet counts look right.
- Select Next.
Review your transactions
CoinTracker checks your transactions for missing or incomplete cost basis, which can overstate your gains and push your tax bill higher than necessary. What you do on this screen depends on what CoinTracker finds.
- If transactions are flagged, review them before filing. Select Review all transactions to open the list and reconcile each flagged transaction. If you'd rather file now and fix these later, select Skip reviewing to continue and generate your forms with the current data.
- If nothing is flagged, select Next to continue.
Import your 1099-DAs
This phase brings your Form 1099-DAs into CoinTracker and reconciles them against your imported transactions. The result is a single, matched view that feeds the final forms.
Note: You can't complete this phase until every exchange has issued your Form 1099-DA. Timing varies by exchange.
Follow the step-by-step 1099-DA import guide for the detailed import flow, and see background on Form 1099-DA for what the form is and when to expect it.
What if the guided flow still shows 'Incomplete' after this step?
The Incomplete status does not block you from accessing your tax forms — it means at least one eligible exchange in the 1099-DA portal is still pending.
- You selected I haven't received my 1099-DA yet — return to the 1099-DA portal and upload the 1099-DA form, or continue skipping it.
- You skipped the 1099-DA step for that exchange — upload the form or continue filing without it.
- The exchange status isn't marked Complete yet — reopen the import modal and finish the steps.
The status updates once every eligible exchange is Complete or explicitly skipped. Your tax forms remain downloadable in the meantime.
Review your tax summary and download your forms
The last phase shows a summary of your taxable activity and generates the forms you need to file.
- Review the tax summary and confirm the numbers look right.
- Select Download tax forms. If you're prompted to upgrade your CoinTracker plan, complete the upgrade and return to this step.
- Download your forms once they generate.
Next, file your forms with your tax software or tax professional. See our TurboTax import guide or H&R Block import guide for software-specific steps.
