Use CoinTracker's 1099-DA portal to upload your 1099-DAs from each exchange and reconcile their numbers against CoinTracker's calculations. Reconciliation helps your filing reflect accurate cost basis — something exchanges aren't always required to report to the IRS.
For background on what Form 1099-DA is and how it affects your taxes, see what you should know about Form 1099-DA.
Before you start
You'll need:
- A 1099-DA PDF from each exchange that issued one (under 20MB each)
- The initial steps in CoinTracker's guided tax flow completed
Exchange timing varies. Many exchanges deliver 1099-DAs through their tax center — look for Tax forms or Tax documents on their website or app. Some also email the form.
1) Open the 1099-DA portal
- Go to the Taxes page in CoinTracker.
- Complete the initial steps in the guided tax flow.
- When the What the new 1099-DA form means for you pop-up appears, select Get started. This opens the 1099-DA portal, where you'll see each of your synced exchanges.
2) Upload and import a 1099-DA
Repeat these steps for each exchange that issued you a 1099-DA.
- In the 1099-DA portal, select Start next to the exchange you want to import a 1099-DA for.
- Upload your 1099-DA PDF (under 20MB). You'll see a confirmation message when the upload completes.
- Select I have my 1099-DA open. CoinTracker will read the PDF and fills in the numbers for you. Double-check the proceed values to confirm it matches your exchange's 1099-DA form.
- After confirming your numbers, select Next.
- If you prefer to type the numbers yourself, select Input each line manually and enter the values from the summary page. Select Next when you're done.
Note: If you haven't received a 1099-DA yet, select I haven't received my 1099-DA yet and reach out to your exchange. You can skip uploading a 1099-DA for any exchange, but we don't recommend it.
3) Review the numbers
CoinTracker will show a side-by-side comparison of its numbers against the numbers on your 1099-DA.
- Confirm the numbers on CoinTracker matches the summary page of your 1099-DA.
- If the numbers don't match, you have the option to continue with using the proceeds from your exchange or CoinTracker's. You can also review your CoinTracker transactions to understand the difference by selecting Review transactions.
- Once you're confident the numbers are correct, select Next.
- Select Continue when you're done importing your 1099-DA forms and confirming your numbers.
Choose how to report
CoinTracker offers three reporting options and flags a recommended one based on your data.
| Option | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Proceed as-is | CoinTracker's numbers match the exchange's numbers, or CoinTracker's numbers slightly overstate them. |
| Adjust proceeds | CoinTracker's proceeds are understated or differ slightly from the 1099-DA. |
| Review transactions | The discrepancy between CoinTracker and the 1099-DA is significant, and you want to re-calculate your proceeds. |
How to replace or remove an uploaded 1099-DA
If you need to replace or remove a 1099-DA form you've already imported — for example, when you receive a corrected form — you can reset the import for that exchange.
- In the 1099-DA portal, select Review next to the exchange you want to reset.
- Select Next, then Yes, looks good.
- Select Review transactions, then Continue. This takes you to the Transactions page.
- Go back to the Taxes page and re-enter the guided tax flow.
- In the 1099-DA portal, select Review again for the same exchange. The import modal opens so you can upload the new PDF, or close the modal to leave the exchange without an uploaded 1099-DA.
