Some Bitcoin (BTC) transactions can appear incomplete, unlinked, or missing in CoinTracker. This usually happens when only one of your wallet's extended public keys or addresses is connected. Hardware wallets like Ledger, Trezor, and Exodus generate addresses under several keys, and any address under a key you haven't connected stays invisible to CoinTracker.
Why This Happens
Bitcoin wallets use multiple derivation paths. If only one address or public key (XPUB/YPUB/ZPUB) is added to CoinTracker:
- Change addresses generated under other paths aren’t tracked.
- Sends and Receives may appear unrelated.
- Linked Trades may look broken.
- Some BTC transactions may appear missing.
For example, you send BTC from an address CoinTracker knows, but the wallet moves the remaining funds to an address derived from a different key. Because that key isn’t imported in CoinTracker, the Receive transaction isn’t visible.
For the underlying mechanics, check out our article on understanding xPub/yPub/zPub keys.
Cross-chain swap behavior
If you swap BTC for another asset, you may only see:
- The Receive transaction of the new asset.
- No corresponding Send from the BTC wallet.
This occurs when the BTC Send originates from an untracked change address.
How to fix BTC transaction issues
1. Import all BTC public keys
Add every XPUB, YPUB, and ZPUB associated with your wallet. Each key represents a different set of derived addresses. Missing keys may make transactions appear like they’re missing.
2. Review derivation paths
Check your hardware wallet to confirm:
- The wallet address the funds were sent from.
- The wallet address the funds were sent to, including change.
3. Link trades manually (If needed)
For cross-chain swaps or bridging services, link the corresponding Send and Receive transactions in CoinTracker.
For more information on linking transactions, check out our linking guide.
4. Check for manual edits or duplicate wallets
Previous edits or multiple wallet imports may affect calculated balances. Please ensure only the correct wallets are active.
If you've previously added your wallet as single addresses, remove any wallets that's associated with your extended key to avoid duplicate transactions.
5. Confirm CoinTracker can see all the addresses associated with your wallet
After adding all keys, refresh your wallet. Any previously missing or unrelated transactions should now appear within your Transaction history.
