Linking connects two related transactions — such as a Send and a Receive across different wallets or blockchains — so CoinTracker processes them together. CoinTracker automatically detects and links many of these, but you can also link or unlink transactions manually to keep your records accurate.
How linking works
When you select two transactions (Send and Receive), CoinTracker will provide the option to choose a link type. The options shown will depend on the two transactions you selected:
- Bridge — You bridged assets to yourself on another chain. CoinTracker processes the transactions together as a Bridge.
- Transfer — You sent assets to another wallet you own. CoinTracker processes the transactions together as a Transfer.
- Linked trade — You made a trade that spanned multiple wallets. CoinTracker processes the transactions together as a Linked Trade.
CoinTracker also automatically detects Transfers when a Send and Receive matches across your wallets. Automatic Transfers ensure the movement of assets is not treated as a taxable event and that your cost basis carries over correctly.
If CoinTracker does not automatically detect the right transactions, you can select two eligible transactions and use the link feature. This often happens when the incoming and outgoing amounts don't match or the token type is different. If a linked transaction is incorrect, you can unlink it to revert back to separate Send and Receive entries.
Link transactions
- Go to the Transactions page.
- Select the two transactions you want to link by clicking the checkbox next to each one.
- Click Link transactions in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
- In the Confirm link between transactions modal, choose Bridge, Transfer, or Linked trade (options vary based on the selected transactions).
- Click Update to finalize.
Note: If Link transactions does not appear in the toolbar, the selected transactions are not eligible to be linked.
Unlink a transaction
- Go to the Transactions page.
- Click the [...] icon next to the linked transaction you want to unlink.
- Select Unlink transaction from the dropdown menu.
The transaction will revert to separate Send and Receive entries. Unlinking is treated as a manual edit, which means:
- The transaction stays unlinked when you resync the wallet.
- CoinTracker won't auto-link the pair again unless you delete the wallet and re-add it.
Manual edits follow the same rules as other transaction changes. For more on how manual edits behave and how to undo them, see how to edit a transaction.
Re-link transactions
If you previously unlinked a Transfer and want to restore it, select the two transactions and click Link transactions in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
Important: Incorrectly linked Transfers can cause insufficient quantity flags or inaccurate cost basis calculations. If you notice either of these issues, check whether any linked transaction needs to be unlinked or re-linked.
