TurboTax Desktop does not support automatic syncing with CoinTracker or uploading attachments when you e-file. You can still file by manually entering your tax data from CoinTracker and mailing your supporting documents to the IRS after e-filing.
Note: TurboTax Online supports automatic syncing and electronic attachment upload. If you are able to use TurboTax Online, see how to sync CoinTracker with TurboTax Online.
Download your Form 8949 Attachment from CoinTracker
Navigate to your Tax Report Center in CoinTracker. Under IRS Forms, click Generate to download your Form 8949 Attachment Pages. The first page is a summary of your short-term and long-term totals — you will use these figures in TurboTax. The remaining pages are the detailed statements you will need to mail to the IRS.
Enter your tax data in TurboTax Desktop
Navigate to investment income
- In TurboTax Desktop, navigate to Federal Taxes > Wages & Income.
- In the Investment Income section, click Start next to Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other.
- Click Add Investments, then select Digital Assets.
Add your CoinTracker details
- In the Digital asset service field, enter CoinTracker.
- When asked if you received a 1099-DA from CoinTracker, select Yes and continue. Selecting Yes turns on the summary entry option used in the steps below — without it, TurboTax requires you to enter each transaction individually.
- When asked if you have 3 or more sales, select Yes. When asked if you bought every investment, select Yes and continue.
- Select Sales section totals.
Enter your sales section totals
Use the summary page of your Form 8949 Attachment Pages to complete the steps below. Not all customers will have all four statement types — only enter the totals for statements that appear on your summary page.
- Select Short-term transaction with basis not reported to the IRS (noncovered). Enter your total proceeds and total cost basis from Statement H on the summary page.
- Select Add another sales total.
- Select Long-term transaction with basis not reported to the IRS (noncovered). Enter your total proceeds and total cost basis from Statement K.
- Select Add another sales total.
- Select Short-term did not receive 1099-DA form. Enter your total proceeds and total cost basis from Statement I.
- Select Add another sales total.
- Select Long-term did not receive 1099-DA form. Enter your total proceeds and total cost basis from Statement L.
Review the totals shown and confirm they match your summary page, then click Continue. TurboTax will display a message that you need to mail a paper copy of your supporting documents to the IRS.
Mail your documents to the IRS
Because TurboTax Desktop does not support uploading e-file attachments, you must complete Form 8453 and mail it along with your Form 8949 Attachment Pages after e-filing.
Important: You must mail your documents within 3 business days of receiving confirmation that your e-filed return was accepted.
- Download and print Form 8453 (U.S. Individual Income Tax Transmittal for an IRS e-file Return). Fill in your name, address, and Social Security number, then check the box next to Form 8949, Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets.
- Print your Form 8949 Attachment Pages. Include only the detailed statement pages that correspond to the entries you made in TurboTax (one per box: H, K, I, and/or L). Do not include the summary page.
- Mail Form 8453 and your printed statement pages to the address below. Do not include a copy of your tax return or any payment with this mailing.
