Transaction categories play a crucial role in classifying different types of cryptocurrency transactions for tax filing and reporting. By changing the default transaction category, you are manually adjusting the details of a transaction that are auto-synced through the API or imported by CSV. To learn more about all the transaction categories, see our breakdown of the available categories.
Keep in mind that some categories are automatically added to your transactions by CoinTracker, but you can refer to this guide to individually or in bulk edit automatically added categories. Read on for steps to change a transaction category.
Important: Changing your transaction categories can impact your tax calculations. Before making changes to your transactions, review the tax implications.

- Choose the transaction you’d like to change the category details.

Note: Some category changes may cause a cost basis recalculation, affecting other features. A checkmark indicates when the recalculation is complete.
Bulk edit a transaction category
If you want to change the category for multiple transactions, we recommend you only bulk edit transactions that are the same type.
- Selecting multiple transaction types such as incoming (credit) and outgoing (debit) transactions will limit the tags and actions available.
- Selecting only incoming (credit), only outgoing (debit) transactions will allow you to tag all like-types with their available tags.
To bulk edit transactions, follow these steps from the web:
- Sign in to CoinTracker and navigate to Transactions.
- Hover next to category details of the transactions you want to change and click the checkbox to select each. Or, click the checkmark next to Category to select all transactions.
- Click Change category.
- Select the category type from the drop-down menu.
Once completed, the change will be immediately reflected in the transaction details.
Note: Some category changes may cause a cost basis recalculation, affecting other features. A checkmark indicates when the recalculation is complete.
Bridge or link two transactions
Follow these steps from the web:
- Sign in to CoinTracker and navigate to Transactions.
- Hover next to the category details of two eligible transactions you’d like to bridge or link.
- Select Link transactions.
- Click Update to confirm.
If you do not see the link transactions option, it means the transactions are not eligible to link.
