What is a transaction category?
Transaction categories help to label various cryptocurrency transactions for tax and reporting needs. By changing a transaction's default category, you can manually adjust the details of transactions that are automatically synchronized.
Some categories are added to your transactions automatically by CoinTracker, but you can still use this guide to edit automatically added categories individually or in bulk if needed.
To see a breakdown of our available categories, review our reference guide: Transaction Category Definitions
Note: "Category" was formerly called "Tags", but it is the same function.
NOTE: Categorizing and editing transactions can impact your tax calculations. Before making changes to your transactions, please review the tax implications here.
How to Change a Transaction Category
1. From the Transactions page, click the down arrow next to the current transaction category of the transaction you would like to change:
2. Search or select a category from the list
3. A confirmation message will appear when the change is complete
NOTE: Some category changes will cause your cost basis to recompute, which can have an impact on other functionalities. When the cost basis indicator in the top right corner of the page is green check, the recomputation is complete:
Bulk Editing Transactions
In some cases users may want to change the category for multiple transactions at the same time. We recommend you only bulk edit transactions that are the same type, selecting multiple transaction types such as incoming (credit) and outgoing (debit) transactions will limit the tags and actions available. Selecting only incoming (credit), only outgoing (debit) transactions will allow you to tag all like-types with their available tags.
Select each of the transactions you would like to edit, navigate to the menu at bottom of the page, and select the applicable options!
Alternatively, you can select all transactions on a single page by checking the 'Category' box at the top left of the transactions list:
