You can extend your filing deadline easily and for no extra fee by completing Form 4868. TurboTax and H&R Block both have options to help you do this electronically as well.
For a full breakdown of how to file an extension in 60 seconds and answers to tax extension FAQs, you can read more on our blog.
If you file your extension before the tax deadline, you will have until the date indicated on Form 4868 to finish filing your taxes, however you may still be required to pay any taxes owed by the IRS's tax deadline. If you need additional assistance, we strongly suggest consulting a tax professional or attorney to understand your tax obligations.
TurboTax also has a helpful guide on what to do after filing for an extension here with more information on interest/penalties on tax payments.
