TurboTax allows up to 10,000 transactions to be imported for capital gains reporting. If you have more, download the TurboTax Online File, which groups sales by asset, and manually upload it to TurboTax.
Follow the below steps to upload your CoinTracker data to TurboTax.
Step 1: Download your TurboTax online file
- Navigate to the Taxes page.
- In Tax Reports, select the Tax filing software tab.
- Download the TurboTax Online File.
This file format groups transactions by asset and sale type, providing a consolidated view with the earliest received date to minimize row counts.
Step 2: Prepare your file for upload
Format the numbers in your CSV file to ensure they display properly. If you’re using Apple Numbers, no format changes are required.
Google Sheets
- Open the CSV file with Google Sheets.
- Use Ctrl + A to select all.
- Go to Format > Number > Number and adjust the format to 0.00.
- Save your changes.
Excel
- Open the CSV file with Excel.
- Use Ctrl + A to select all.
- Click the Home tab, then Number, and adjust the format to 0.00.
- Save your file.
Step 3: Upload your file to TurboTax
- In TurboTax, navigate to the section dedicated to cryptocurrency transactions.
- Select Enter a different way when prompted for how you'd like to import your transactions.
- Click on Cryptocurrency.
- Choose Upload it from my computer.
- Select CoinTracker as your source from the dropdown menu.
- Find and select the CSV file you prepared.
- Confirm the upload to complete.
